Safety Tips From the Axeperts

Axel’s is staffed by a friendly and knowledgeable team of Axeperts who are dedicated to making your experience as fun and safe as possible. They carefully supervise beginners and experienced throwers to ensure everyone throws properly and listens to the safety rules. By following their tips, you can improve your axe-throwing skills while staying safe in our facility.

1. Follow General Safety Rules

We have several general safety rules in place to make axe-throwing an enjoyable sport for everyone. Our rules include:

  • Behaving responsibly: Roughhousing and rowdy behavior, especially with axes in hand, are not allowed. Be aware of your surroundings and respect other participants.
  • Using axes properly: Use the axe as intended — for throwing, not for pointing or gesturing. Always keep axes inside the throwing lanes, and never bring them into the lounge area.
  • Leaving outside axes at home: We provide everything you need to throw our axes and have an enjoyable time, so please do not bring in your own axe. Our axes are designed to ensure safety and work with our target system.
  • Entering throwing areas only when it is safe: Enter throwing areas when no one else is throwing and when the axes have come to a rest. While each lane can accommodate six people, only one person should throw at a time, so stay outside of the throwing area until it is your turn to throw.

2. Participate in Training

Our friendly Axeperts are here to ensure you have the skills and confidence to participate in axe-throwing safely. Every session begins with an overview of our safety rules, details about how to handle axes properly and explanations about how to use the games we offer. Our Axeperts will coach you and your group on throwing axes so you can have fun while staying safe.

If you are new to axe-throwing, they will guide you through the basics, such as how to grip the axe, what your stance should look like and when to let the axe go. They will help you learn all the right steps to take before throwing the axe to give you the best chance of making it stick. Plus, they are always around to answer your questions, offer advice on technique and help you feel confident with your throw.

3. Know the Age Limits

All throwers at Axel’s must be at least 10 years old. Throwing an axe requires coordination, strength and proper throwing techniques to ensure safety. Throwers should also be able to handle the axes responsibly and listen to instructions from our Axeperts.

Axe-throwing can be safe and fun for groups of friends, too. We are happy to offer kids birthday party packages for groups of kids ages 10 to 16. For these events, you will need to fill out our contact form to work out the details with our team directly. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

4. Remember Food and Drink Best Practices

We offer a delicious menu of various pub foods and alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages to make your axe-throwing experience as enjoyable as possible. We can also provide barbeque or pizza catering for private groups and events. To promote safety while eating, drinking and throwing, we have a few rules in place:

  • Keep food and drinks in the dedicated lounge space: Enjoy your food and drinks at the provided lane tables and in the main lounge area. Never bring them into the throwing lanes to ensure the lanes stay clean and free of distractions.
  • Drink responsibly: Participants are free to enjoy alcoholic beverages and axe-throwing simultaneously. We encourage drinking responsibly and in moderation.

5. Wear the Right Clothing and Shoes

When axe-throwing, you must wear closed-toe shoes. These types of shoes will protect your feet from an accidental axe drop. They will also help you get the stable footing you need to throw the axe well. Leave flip-flops, sandals and high heels at home.

We also recommend you wear a loose-fitting top since you’ll need a full range of motion for your upper body. Form-fitting clothing can restrict your ability to aim properly. Simple outfits that are comfortable and offer good mobility are ideal. While your clothing should be fairly loose, don’t wear anything too baggy. Loose sweatshirts, scarves, shawls, brimmed hats and some accessories can limit your movement and snag on objects.

Our Axe-Throwing Safety Measures

We pride ourselves on providing one of the safest axe-throwing experiences possible. We incorporate many safety measures throughout our establishment, including:

  • End grain board systems: Our end grain boards are made with superior wood designed to help axes stick. This target system is more fun and safer than standard pine board targets.
  • Anti-bounce-back systems: If the axe doesn’t stick to the target, it will simply drop safely to a matted floor. The mats prevent the axe from bouncing back down the lane.
  • Lightweight axes: Axes, or hatches, used for axe-throwing are lightweight and easy to throw. They are designed for the game of axe-throwing, not for chopping wood or any type of serious cutting, making them safer to handle.
  • Private lanes: Each lane has one target and is separated from the other lanes, distancing you from other participants when throwing. You’ll also be far away from the board, so you can rest easy knowing that the axes won’t bounce and hit you or someone else.
